Nokia Impossible Flop a book translation project from Finnish to English (original title in Fin: Nokian mahdoton mahalasku)
We are searching for financing to translate and edit our book about Nokia into English. The Finnish language book ”Nokian mahdoton mahalasku” [Nokia's Impossible Flop or Flight] was written by Risto Rumpunen and Merita Vilen and published last year by Moimedia Oy. The Finnish language book is on sale in book shops around Finland, can be bought as an e-book from Elisa.fi/kirja and has been purchased by libraries around Finland.
WHAT IS THE BOOK ABOUT
Nokia was a pioneer of the mobile phone business from 1990s till 2006 dominating the entire industry, a model company that was praised and studied in business literature. It’s bright lights blinded even most critical viewers to assume everything was well inside the company in spite of that from grass root’s perspective a lot of things were going seriously wrong.
Behind the main story of a global giant, a personal grass root’s story of a development manager holds together book’s different themes. In tandem with her personal story, writers’ have interviewed dozens of Nokia’s ex-employees and business partners.
Big and small stories create honest view what is was like to work inside the global leader, revealing how Nokia’s corporate culture was driven into a state where arrogance grew and it was no longer competitive.
Sharp analysis is steamed with humoristic metaphors. Condensed history of Nokia and Finland flies through the company’s history from 1865 to 2014 telling humorous and tragic tales of people who shaped it and how it survived during turbulent years and finally how it fell down faster than any other honestly run global company in recent times.
WHAT ARE WE OFFERING
We will give anyone willing to invest €50 into our project a signed hard copy of an English language book. You can consider this as a very low risk pre buy deal for a book that will open your eyes about Nokia and the company’s unique power inside Finland. At the time of writing this Nokia is rumoured to be thinking of getting back into mobile phones business. Is it a good idea? Fund our project, read the book and be part of creating something unique. We are searching for funding between €15-20 000.
Merita Vilen worked for Nokia in Finland and in the US [Texas]. Risto Rumpunen has been working as a investigative journalist, writer and a filmmaker. We have a translator and an native English editor prepared to start working on the project.
USE OF FUNDS
We will use the money to translate, edit and print 400-500 hard copies and some paperback copies for journalists and marketing purposes as well as for some travel and running expenses to market the book.
We will deliver your a hard back copy/copies by mail. You will be making history by helping a tiny but gutsy media and film company to start it’s exciting journey to become internationally known business brand.
Our aim is to start translation as soon as our minimum target has been reached and get the printed book to our funders at the latest end of February 2016 and e-book earlier than that.
