A Syrian pop-up coffee house in Kallio between 1. - 15. April 2016
We are Yasmin, Hanan, Wesam and Issam. We were forced to leave our homes in Syria because of the extreme dangerous living conditions in our hometowns Sweida and Aleppo. We have been in Helsinki for a few months now and are trying to rebuild our lives here.
We will rent a space from Made in Kallio in Vaasankatu, Helsinki, for two weeks in April 2016. The space is suitable for a small coffee house. We will serve coffee, arabic coffee, tea, cold non-alcoholic drinks and warm soups, salads, sandwiches, Syrian specialities, desserts and sweets throughout the whole day. We will also arrange special events with Arabic music and entertainment.
The funding will be used to the rent of Made in Kallio and to buy some utensils and materials for cooking (ingredients).

Yasmin and Hanan studied Business Administration in Damascus University for 2 years before fleeing Syria. Wesam did Engineering and completed his degree in 2012. Issam is a fashion designer with a degree from Aleppo University. He has a great passion for cooking and he wants to study to become a chef in Finland. He will be in charge of the menú and head of kitchen in Café Damascus.
Yasmin and Hanan have both been working as waitresses while studying. Apart from serving food and helping with cooking, they will also be responsible of PR and marketing of Café Damascus. Wesam will be doing a bit of everything in the café and he also designed our great logo. (Aija Kuparinen and Janne Salovaara will help with translations and contacts in Helsinki.)
All the food will be prepared with love, attention and fresh ingredients. It will be served to you with the greatest care in fluent English, Spanish, intermediate French or very basic Finnish. Come and meet us, get to know our culture and enjoy a moment with us!
